On January 7, the Huadian Shandong LaizhouTushan 1,000 MW Salt-Alkali Tidal Flat Solar-Storage Integrated Project, China's largest single-site salt-alkali tidal flat solar-storage and salt-solar complementary project, was successfully connected to the grid and began operation. It is also the largest standalone photovoltaic (PV) project in Shandong Province.

As part of the third batch of national large-scale wind and solar base construction projects, the Tushan project spans an area of 18,000 mu (approximately 12 square kilometers) and has an installed capacity of 1,000 MW. It features a 200 MW/400 MWh electrochemical energy storage system and two 220 kV booster substations. Once operational, the project is expected to generate 1.442 billion kWh of green electricity annually, saving 444,000 tons of standard coal and reducing annual emissions of carbon dioxide by 1.2 million tons, sulfur dioxide by 230.8 tons, nitrogen oxides by 258.1 tons, and particulate matter by 46.23 tons.

Wang Xueli, Director of the Comprehensive Energy Department at HuadianLaizhou Power Generation Co., Ltd., explained that the project was strategically built on extensive salt-alkali tidal flats, integrating photovoltaic power generation with salt production. This innovative "salt-solar complementary" model combines "solar power generation on water" with "brine production via evaporation on the water surface," creating a unique dual-purpose industrial system.

The project's large scale, dispersed land layout, and high-humidity, high-salinity environment present significant operational challenges. To address these, Huadian partnered with Huawei to develop a digitalized photovoltaic power station. Using advanced lifecycle digital technology, the system integrates functions such as inspection, analysis, diagnostics, fault localization, and repair into a single platform. This highly efficient, one-stop intelligent renewable energy solution enables "unattended operation and minimal maintenance," setting a new standard for smart photovoltaic power plants. In addition to producing clean energy, the project is expected to boost the annual income of salt producers in Tushan Town by over 7 million yuan, delivering both ecological and economic benefits.
