UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) lined steel pipes are highly resistant to chemical corrosion, making them ideal for harsh mining, chemical processing, and slurry transport applications. Here’s how they withstand corrosive environments:
Steel Shell: Provides structural strength and pressure resistance.
UHMWPE Liner: Acts as a corrosion-proof barrier, preventing chemicals from contacting the steel.
UHMWPE liner: UHMWPE is non-reactive to most acids, alkalis, and solvents.
Key Resistances:
Acids: Hydrochloric (HCl), Sulfuric (H₂SO₄), Phosphoric (H₃PO₄) – up to moderate concentrations.
Alkalis: Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), Potassium hydroxide (KOH) – highly resistant.
Salts & Brines: No degradation in seawater or mining brines.
Organic Solvents: Resists alcohols, ketones, but may swell in hydrocarbons (e.g., diesel).
Exception: Strong oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid at high concentrations) can degrade UHMWPE over time.
Seamless Lining: uhmwpe liner is fit into steel pipe through a tight-fit process, two ends of uhmwpe liner is heated and flanged into a flare end for connection. there is no thermal welding of uhmwpe liner, prevent leak paths for corrosive fluids.
(UHMWPE Flare End Stub Connection Sketch)
Liner material | Chemical resistance | Temperature limit | Abrasion resistance |
UHMWPE | Excellent (PH 2-14) | 80℃ | Best |
PP (polypropylene) | Good (PH 1-12) | 100℃ | Moderate |
PTFE (Teflon) | Best (all chemicals) | 260℃ | Poor |
Rubber (Natural / NBR) | Moderate (PH 4-10) | 70-120℃ | Good |
Advantage of UHMWPE: Best balance of chemical resistance + abrasion resistance for mining/slurry applications.
UHMWPE-lined steel pipes excel in chemical corrosion resistance due to:
Chemical Inert UHMWPE liner blocking corrosive agents.
Robust tight fit and flare end to prevent fluid seepage to steel.
Superior abrasion resistance for slurry applications.
For extreme chemical/temperature conditions, PTFE-lined pipes may be better, but UHMWPE offers the best cost-performance balance for most mining and industrial uses.
